Best Product Design Agencies in 2026

MetaLab is the strongest all-round product design agency, with Slack, Uber and Coinbase behind it. Ustwo suits regulated, service-heavy products. Netguru pairs design with engineering at scale. thoughtbot embeds small senior teams. Eleken is the cheapest credible option for early-stage SaaS, from $5,000 a month.

We assessed 55 agencies holding a product design practice against the six standing SaaSInsight criteria, weighted for this category as independent recognition 15, client evidence 30, specialisation and fit 25, commercial transparency 15, tenure 5 and documented outcomes 10. Prices appear only where the firm publishes them itself or states them on a named third-party profile, and are left out entirely where the only figure available was an estimate. Read the full method. No entry on this list is a paid placement.

What counts as product design here

This list is about the application, not the website in front of it. Every agency below designs software that people use repeatedly and log into: dashboards, workflows, mobile apps, onboarding, the design system that keeps all of it consistent as the team grows.

That distinction matters more in this category than in any other we rank, because the label is worn by three quite different kinds of firm. Identity studios use it to describe brand work that touches a screen. Marketing site builders use it to describe landing pages. Genuine product studios use it to describe six months of research, flows and iteration against usage data. All three will answer your brief. Only one of them has done the work you are about to buy.

So specialisation and fit carries 25 points here, more than on any other SaaSInsight ranking. The question it answers is narrow and unforgiving: can this firm show applications it designed, not campaigns or homepages.

How we ranked these

Six criteria, the same six we use on every ranking, reweighted for what actually predicts a good outcome on product work.

  • Client evidence · 30 · Shipped applications we can look at, with the firm named as the designer
  • Specialisation and fit · 25 · Whether the practice is genuinely product-led rather than brand or marketing work relabelled
  • Independent recognition · 15 · Third-party signals, weighted lower here than elsewhere
  • Commercial transparency · 15 · Whether pricing and engagement terms are stated before a sales call
  • Documented outcomes · 10 · Named metrics attached to named projects
  • Tenure · 5 · Years operating, as a weak proxy for stability

Recognition sits at 15 rather than the 30 we give it on Webflow rankings for a simple reason: product design has no verifiable partner ladder. There is no equivalent of an Enterprise Certified Partner badge that a third party issues and can revoke. Awards in this category are largely self-nominated, so we let them count for something and no more. The full framework is at our methodology page.

Why the existing lists for this query are hard to use

Run this search and most of what comes back has a structural problem. Several of the highest-ranking pages are published by product design agencies, which place themselves at number one on their own list. Others are directories carrying thousands of firms sorted by review count, where placement can be bought and no entry has a downside.

A ranking where nobody has a weakness is not a ranking. It is a list of everyone who was willing to be on it. Every entry below carries a limitation, and several of them are the reason a firm placed where it did rather than higher.

    About Metalab

MetaLab is a product design agency best known for shaping some of the world’s most widely used digital products. Their work is deeply rooted in product thinking, focusing on usability, clarity, and scalability rather than surface-level aesthetics. MetaLab typically partners with product-driven companies at critical moments early growth, rapid scale, or platform maturity where design decisions have long-term structural impact. Rather than separating brand and product, MetaLab treats them as tightly connected systems. Visual identity, interaction design, and product architecture are developed together to ensure consistency across user experience and brand perception. This approach has made MetaLab a trusted partner for technology companies building tools that must feel intuitive, durable, and credible over time.

MetaLab does not publish rates or a project minimum, and the client roster suggests the floor is high. Worth establishing budget on the first call rather than after a scoping exercise.

    Featured work

    • Uber

For Uber, MetaLab partnered on the design of core product experiences used by millions of people worldwide. The challenge was to support rapid global scale while ensuring the product remained intuitive, trustworthy, and consistent across regions, use cases, and user types. MetaLab focused on refining interaction patterns, interface clarity, and system-level design decisions that shape how the Uber brand is experienced day to day. Rather than approaching branding as a visual exercise, the work embeds brand values, reliability, speed, and ease directly into product behaviour. This project exemplifies how brand perception can be built and sustained through product design at massive scale.

The challenge was to improve usability for both freelancers and clients while reinforcing Upwork’s position as a credible, enterprise-ready platform. MetaLab approached the project through deep product thinking, aligning interface design, hierarchy, and interaction flows with Upwork’s brand promise. By simplifying workflows and strengthening consistency across the platform, the redesign improved both user confidence and brand perception. The work demonstrates MetaLab’s strength in delivering branding through product systems where experience, not messaging, defines the brand.

Product-led organisations that need human-centred digital products and brand experiences designed through usability, interaction, and service thinking.

    About Ustwo

Ustwo is a global digital product studio known for designing products and experiences that balance usability, craft, and human-centred thinking. Their work often sits at the intersection of product, brand, and service design, helping organisations turn complex challenges into clear, intuitive digital experiences. Rather than positioning themselves as a traditional branding agency, ustwo approaches brand expression through product behaviour and interaction design. This makes them particularly effective for organisations where brand perception is shaped primarily through apps, platforms, and services rather than marketing-led touchpoints. With a strong culture of experimentation and social impact, ustwo frequently partners with both global brands and early-stage ventures to explore new ideas and build products that scale.

A studio of this size runs several engagements at once, so the seniority of the people on your project is worth confirming in writing before signing. No public pricing either.

    Featured work

    • Samsung

For Samsung, ustwo partnered on designing digital experiences that shape how users interact with the brand across devices and platforms. The challenge was to translate Samsung’s scale and technological ambition into interfaces that feel intuitive, human, and consistent despite the complexity of its product ecosystem. ustwo focused on interaction design, usability, and system-level thinking, ensuring that brand values such as innovation, reliability, and accessibility are expressed through everyday product behaviour. Rather than relying on overt visual branding, the work embeds brand perception into how products function and respond. This project highlights ustwo’s strength in delivering branding through experience where consistency and clarity across interactions define the brand more than static assets.

Ustwo approached the project through service and product design, aligning interface decisions with Peloton’s tone, energy, and community-driven ethos. The resulting experience reinforces brand trust and emotional connection through usability, pacing, and interaction, not marketing language. This work demonstrates how ustwo helps brands express identity through behaviour, making product experience the primary carrier of brand value.

Startups and scale-ups building complex digital products, SaaS and fintech companies, teams needing end-to-end product design and development support

    About Netguru

Netguru is a Europe-based digital product consultancy known for combining product strategy, UX/UI design, and engineering at scale. The agency works with startups, scale-ups, and enterprises to design and build digital products that are both user-centred and technically robust. Unlike studios that focus purely on design, Netguru operates as a full product partner supporting clients from early discovery and MVP stages through to large-scale product development. Their design work is closely integrated with research, validation, and engineering, making them particularly relevant for startups that need to move quickly without sacrificing product quality. With large, multidisciplinary teams and mature delivery processes, Netguru is well-suited for organisations tackling complex digital platforms, regulated industries, or multi-market products that require consistency and scalability.

A consultancy at this scale is set up for build-and-design engagements, so a small standalone design piece may not get its best people. The $50 to $99 hourly figure on file is an estimate rather than a published rate, so treat the $30,000 project minimum as the reliable number.

    Featured work

    • Żabka

Netguru partnered with Żabka to design and build the digital experience behind its autonomous convenience stores. The project focused on creating a seamless, frictionless customer journey allowing users to enter the store, pick products, and check out automatically through a mobile-first experience. The work combined digital product design with service and experience design, ensuring that complex technologies such as computer vision and automated payments felt simple and intuitive to everyday users. The result was a scalable digital system that supports Żabka’s expansion into cashierless retail.

Companies that want a small senior team embedded alongside their own people, especially on Rails codebases or an MVP that needs to be built properly the first time.

    About thoughtbot

A consultancy rather than a conventional agency: the model is small teams of designers and developers embedded with the client, and the site is explicit that engagements run at every stage from early startup to scaling enterprise. The Rails specialism is the strongest differentiator, and Rails maintenance is offered as a standing service, which makes this one of the few records we hold with a genuine ongoing support line.

Stated sector focus is healthcare, finance and insurance. The client list is broad and recognisable, spanning Mailchimp, Kickstarter, Vimeo, Harvard Business Review and Disney.

Two gaps to close before this is used in a location filtered list. The site states no headquarters, describing teammates across the Americas, Europe, West Asia and Africa, so `location` is deliberately blank rather than guessed. It also states no team size, founding year or pricing.

The Ruby on Rails specialism is a genuine strength and also a signal: if your stack is elsewhere, ask how much of the engineering depth actually transfers to your project.

thoughtbot built the API and application architecture behind the UK state bank's Coronavirus loan guarantee portal, then migrated it from a UK cloud host to Azure with minimal downtime. The portal handled over £78bn of loan distribution and was shortlisted at the 2021 Banking Tech Awards. It shows the firm can take on regulated, high-volume public financial infrastructure rather than only greenfield startup work.

Useful evidence for founders who want a build partner that plans its own exit.

Early-stage and growth-stage SaaS startups, B2B software companies, founders building MVPs, teams needing ongoing product design support

    About Eleken

Eleken is a product design agency specialising in UX/UI design for SaaS companies. The studio is known for its practical, product-led approach focusing on usability, clarity, and conversion rather than purely aesthetic outcomes. Their work is tightly aligned with business goals such as activation, retention, and feature adoption. The agency works primarily with startups and growing SaaS teams, often stepping in during early product stages or major redesign phases. Eleken’s process emphasises rapid iteration, close collaboration with product managers and engineers, and design decisions informed by user behaviour and feedback. With a strong focus on B2B software and complex workflows, Eleken is well-suited for companies building dashboards, platforms, and tools that need to balance functionality with ease of use.

The client list is mostly early-stage and less widely known than others here, so there is less public evidence of how the team performs on a large, mature product. Worth asking to see the biggest thing they have worked on.

Product-led startups and technology companies that need strong visual identity and UX/UI design delivered as a unified, scalable system.

    About Ramotion

Ramotion is a brand and product design agency that helps technology companies define their identity and translate it into digital products and platforms. Their work is highly execution-driven, combining brand strategy, visual identity, and UX/UI design into cohesive systems that scale across apps, websites, and marketing touchpoints. The agency is particularly known for its strong visual craft and system-oriented approach, making them a popular partner for fast-growing startups and product-led companies. Ramotion often works at moments of transition, launch, rebrand, or rapid growth where consistency between brand expression and product experience is critical. Their projects typically balance bold visual language with practical design systems that support long-term use and iteration.

The brand and product mix is the offer, so a team that only needs interface work may end up paying for identity capability it will not use. Worth scoping the two separately when you ask for a quote.

For Mozilla Firefox, Ramotion worked on a brand redesign aimed at modernising one of the world’s most recognisable open-source technology brands. The challenge was to refresh Firefox’s visual identity while preserving its values around openness, privacy, and accessibility without alienating an existing global user base. Ramotion developed a refined visual system that strengthened clarity, scalability, and consistency across digital touchpoints. The redesign focused on simplifying forms, improving recognisability at small sizes, and creating a flexible system that could adapt across products and platforms. This project demonstrates Ramotion’s ability to evolve established brands through thoughtful system design rather than surface-level aesthetic change.

Enterprise and late stage technology companies running brand and product work at a scale that needs several hundred people behind it.

    About Instrument

The largest firm in this batch by a wide margin at more than 350 staff, based in Portland with a New York office. Client roster is enterprise technology at the top end: Google, Spotify, Electronic Arts, ServiceNow, Uber and Oura.

That scale is the whole consideration when placing it. For an enterprise brand or product programme it is a credible answer and belongs on the enterprise cuts. For the boutique to mid market buyer who reads most of our lists, a 350 person agency is likely to be the wrong shape and the wrong budget, and saying so plainly is more useful than ranking it highly everywhere.

Services are stated only at the top level as brand, marketing and product. Founding year is given as more than twenty years ago without a specific date. No pricing, sector focus or engagement model is stated.

The $250,000 starting point is the real filter. Below roughly half a million in total budget this is unlikely to be the right conversation, and the record shows more brand and marketing work than pure application design.

Technology-driven companies that want brand identity, digital product design, and web experiences developed as a single, cohesive system.

    About Clay

Clay is a digital brand and UX design agency known for creating visually distinctive, product-driven brand experiences for technology companies. Their work sits at the intersection of brand identity and digital product design, often blurring the line between marketing websites, platforms, and core product experiences. Clay is particularly recognised for translating complex technology into clear, high-impact digital interfaces that feel modern, confident, and commercially sharp. Rather than treating brand and product as separate disciplines, Clay designs them as a unified system where visual identity, interaction design, and motion work together to shape perception and usability. This approach has made Clay a go-to partner for fast-growing startups and established tech companies that want their digital presence to feel premium, coherent, and future-ready.

No published rate or project minimum, and the studio is known for visual distinctiveness more than for research depth. If your problem is that users cannot complete a task, probe how much discovery is included.

SaaS teams that want product design and no-code build in one place.

    About Tonik

Assessed from public evidence, not direct experience. Tonik (Poland) is a broad product and web studio operating since 2007, spanning product design through no-code build, with SaaS clients like Chili Piper and Voucherify. Not to be confused with the Dutch studio Thonik. Editorial write-up pending a human pass.

The no-code build route suits a lot of products and constrains others. If you expect to outgrow it, agree early what happens at the point where the product needs custom engineering. Note this is the Polish Tonik, not the Dutch studio of the same name.

    • LangChain brand and website

A brand rebuild and website overhaul for an AI developer framework serving over 100,000 developers. The interesting part is the architecture: a parent identity that still lets LangChain, LangSmith and LangServe read as distinct sub-products, which is the harder version of the problem for any company shipping more than one thing. Designed in Figma and built in Webflow, so the marketing team can run the site without engineering time.

A launch campaign built as an interactive experience rather than a page: personalised boarding-pass tickets, a live seating chart, dynamically generated OG images for sharing, and scroll-triggered animation. Built with React, ThreeJS and Supabase itself with custom shaders, so this is the engineering end of the studio rather than the no-code end, and it shows they can ship a stateful, per-user campaign on a deadline.

    Notable clients
Netflix, Vine, HQ Trivia, Rockefeller Center, Gemini, Whistle
    Best for
Funded startups that need product, brand and launch marketing from one team rather than stitching three vendors together.

    About Big Human

Unusually broad for its size, covering product design, brand and performance marketing under one roof. That breadth is the pitch and also the caveat: a firm listing paid search, social, email and full stack engineering alongside brand strategy is not a specialist in any of them, and a buyer who needs depth on one discipline should compare it against a focused shop.

Founded 2010 and based in the New York metropolitan area with stated offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago, working remotely. Vine and HQ Trivia are era defining consumer products and give the portfolio real credibility on consumer mobile specifically.

Stated sector coverage is very wide, from fintech and healthcare to Web3, AI and space exploration, which reads more like a portfolio index than a focus. Team size is described only as small but mighty, and no pricing is stated.

The service range is unusually wide for a team of this size, so it is worth asking which of the disciplines is the in-house strength and which gets subcontracted. No published pricing.

Mission driven startups, cultural institutions and internal teams at large organisations that want senior engineering without committing to a fixed scope up front.

    About Sanctuary Computer

The commercial terms are the standout. The studio states that it bills in arrears for work already done and that contracts carry no minimum commitment, which is close to the opposite of the quarterly floor Sparkbox sets. For a buyer who wants senior engineering without a large up front commitment, that is a genuinely differentiating term and worth quoting directly.

The client list is the strongest in this batch: Stripe, Figma, Mozilla, Nike, Pinterest, Etsy, Dropbox and IBM alongside cultural institutions including the Brooklyn Museum and the ACLU. Stated audience is mission driven startups, cultural institutions and elite teams inside large organisations.

Capability is broad and technical, extending past web into IoT, embedded software and AI and LLM work. Stated sectors are AI, fintech and crypto, healthcare and IoT. The site does not explicitly state a headquarters city, so `location` is blank rather than guessed; New York is strongly implied by other references and needs confirming.

At $175 to $295 an hour with a small team, this suits focused senior work rather than a large multi-track programme. Check capacity for your timeline before committing.

    About Halo Lab

Halo Lab is a full-service digital design agency focused on UI/UX, branding, and product design, with a strong emphasis on creating visually polished and user-centric digital experiences. Unlike Webflow-specialist studios, Halo Lab operates more broadly across platforms, supporting both websites and product interfaces. Their work is characterised by clean visual systems, modern UI patterns, and a strong focus on usability, making them a reliable choice for companies building or refining digital products. The team often works with startups and SaaS companies, helping translate complex ideas into intuitive, well-structured interfaces. Halo Lab is best suited for teams that need a design-first partner across both product and marketing touchpoints, especially when consistency between brand, website, and application UI is a priority.

The offer spans UI, UX, branding and development, so ask which team actually leads product work as opposed to visual design. Less public evidence of long-running engagements on mature products.

    About Bakken & Bæck

Bakken & Bæck is a digital-first design studio known for blending strong brand thinking with deep product and UX expertise. Founded in Norway and now operating across Europe, the studio has built a reputation for working closely with startups and scale-ups to shape brands that live primarily through digital products. Unlike traditional branding agencies, Bakken & Bæck approaches brand as something experienced through interfaces, interactions, and systems, not just logos and visuals. Their work often begins with product strategy and user experience, then extends naturally into brand identity and visual language. This makes them especially well-suited for early-stage and growth-stage companies where product and brand need to evolve together. The studio operates with small, senior-led teams and a highly collaborative process. Projects tend to be thoughtful, research-driven, and built for long-term scalability rather than surface-level polish.

We found less documented interface and flow work than the stated product expertise suggests, so ask to see application case studies directly rather than identity work. The $25,000 floor is stated; the hourly figure circulating is an estimate and should not be relied on.

    Featured work

    • IKEA Studio

Bakken & Bæck developed the brand identity and creative system for IKEA Studio, an experimental IKEA platform focused on exploring future living, design research, and conceptual ideas. The work centred on creating a distinct visual language that could exist alongside IKEA’s core brand while still feeling clearly connected to it. The identity was designed to be flexible and expressive, supporting storytelling, research outputs, exhibitions, and concept-led content across both digital and physical environments. Rather than a commercial brand system, the work positioned IKEA Studio as an exploratory space allowing ideas, prototypes, and narratives to be communicated with clarity and consistency.

The challenge was to bring clarity and trust to a product dealing with highly technical and often intimidating subject matter. The branding focused on creating a clean, structured visual system that could scale across product, web, and marketing touchpoints. The result was a brand that balances crypto-native credibility with more traditional financial cues, helping CoinTracker communicate reliability, transparency, and ease of use as the platform grew.

Organisations with an in house team that needs senior front end and design systems capacity added to it, and a budget that can carry a quarterly commitment.

    About Sparkbox

The clearest pricing disclosure of any agency in this batch, and it defines the firm. Engagements are stated as a team of two to four people at an investment of $150,000 to $250,000 per quarter, with flexibility on structure. That is a rolling capacity model, not project work, and it sets a real floor: this is not a firm for a one off marketing site.

Design systems and standards based development are the stated specialisms, which fits the embedded team model. Roughly twenty people are listed across leadership, client success, experience design, production and operations.

The site states no headquarters, founding year, client names or sector focus, so `location` is blank rather than guessed and needs confirming before this record is used in a US filtered list.

The quarterly commitment is the constraint: this is capacity added to an existing in-house team, not a firm that will design your product from nothing. The client base leans education and public sector rather than software.

    About Upstatement

The journalistic origin is the distinguishing feature and it shows in the service mix: data storytelling, content strategy and editorial web design sit alongside conventional brand and engineering work. That combination is genuinely uncommon and makes the studio a strong fit for publishers, universities and any product where the content itself is the interface.

Founded 2008 with more than forty staff, headquartered in Boston with stated presence in New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, London and Barcelona. That is real scale and multi market coverage.

Stated capability runs the full span from brand positioning and naming through to technical architecture and CMS implementation, so it can hold a project end to end. No pricing, sector focus or engagement model is stated, and the named client evidence on the about page is thin at two names, so the portfolio is worth reviewing before a top placement.

Only two clients are named on the record we hold, which is a thin base for a $100,000 starting commitment, so ask for a fuller reference list. The editorial strength is a poor match for a conventional SaaS dashboard.

How to choose the right one for you

The ranking answers who is strongest overall. It does not answer who is right for you, and on product work those two questions diverge more than on any other kind of design engagement. Route by your hardest constraint.

If you are pre-seed to Series A. Start with Eleken at $5,000 to $25,000 a month or Halo Lab from $10,000. Both publish their pricing, both work at startup pace, and neither will put you through a three-month discovery phase you cannot afford. Tonik at $8,000 to $40,000 is the third call if you want the build handled too.

If you have engineers but no designers. thoughtbot and Sanctuary Computer both embed small senior teams alongside people you already employ, which is a different engagement from handing over a brief. Sanctuary Computer's no-minimum, bill-in-arrears terms make it the lowest-risk way to start if you are not sure how much help you need.

If you have designers but no engineers. Netguru and Tonik both close that gap, at opposite ends of the budget. Netguru from $30,000 if the product is complex, Tonik from $8,000 if no-code will carry it.

If you are in a regulated or high-stakes domain. Ustwo, on the strength of BlackRock, HSBC and National Grid. Healthcare, finance and infrastructure products fail on compliance and edge cases rather than aesthetics, and service design capability is what covers that. Netguru is the alternative if build is in scope.

If you need a design system rather than screens. Sparkbox, if you can carry $150,000 a quarter, or MetaLab if the system has to be designed alongside the product itself. This is the one requirement where hiring a generalist reliably disappoints.

If the product and the brand both need work. Ramotion, Clay or Bakken & Bæck. All three treat identity and interface as one system rather than two projects, which saves a handover that usually goes badly.

If budget is genuinely not the constraint. Instrument from $250,000, or Ustwo. Both can staff a programme rather than a project.

What to watch for in the pitch

Four things worth doing before you sign anything, whichever way you go.

Ask who is actually on your team, by name and seniority, and get it into the contract. The gap between the people in the pitch and the people on the project is the single most common complaint about agencies of every size.

Ask what you own at the end. You want the Figma source files, not exported assets, and you want the design system documented well enough that your next designer can pick it up. A firm that keeps the source files is keeping you.

Ask what they will measure. A product design engagement that cannot name a number it is trying to move, activation, task completion, support ticket volume, retention, is a redesign rather than a product improvement. Both are legitimate purchases, but you should know which one you are making.

Ask what happens after launch. Products are not finished when they ship, and a firm that treats measurement and iteration as a separate future contract is one you will be renegotiating with at the worst moment.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a product design agency cost?

It splits by engagement model rather than by firm quality. Monthly retainers on this list run from about $5,000 at Eleken to $25,000 and above, and project work starts at $8,000 with Tonik, $10,000 with Halo Lab and thoughtbot, $15,000 with UX Studio and $30,000 with Netguru. The top of the market is a different order of magnitude: Upstatement starts at $100,000 and Instrument at $250,000. Published hourly rates on this page range from $50 at Halo Lab to $300 at Instrument. Several of the strongest firms here publish nothing at all, which is a real difference between them and the ones that do.

Is an agency cheaper than hiring an in-house product designer?

It depends entirely on whether your design work is steady or lumpy. A senior in-house product designer in the US costs six figures once benefits, tooling and recruitment are counted, and that cost continues whether there is 40 hours of design work that week or four. An agency converts that into a variable cost. The rough dividing line is sustained workload: if you have close to a full week of design work every week for a year or more, an in-house hire starts to look better by the second year. If your needs come in bursts, a launch, a redesign, a new module, the agency model wins on cost and on the range of skills you can reach. Many teams do both, hiring in-house for day-to-day product work and bringing in an agency for the pieces that need specialist depth.

Should I hire on a retainer or per project?

Match it to how settled your product direction is. A project with a defined scope suits a specific, bounded piece of work: an MVP, a redesign of one flow, a design system. A retainer suits continuous product development where the next month's work depends on what this month's users do. The trap with projects is that product work rarely ends cleanly, so a fixed scope often becomes a change-order negotiation. The trap with retainers is paying for capacity you do not use. Ask about the cancellation terms either way. Sanctuary Computer's approach, no minimum commitment with billing in arrears, is the most flexible arrangement on this list and a useful benchmark to hold others against.

Do I own the Figma source files when the engagement ends?

You should, but confirm it in writing before you start rather than assuming. What you want transferred is the editable source: the Figma files with components and variables intact, the design system documentation, and the research artefacts behind the decisions. Exported PNGs and a PDF style guide are not the same thing and will cost you a rebuild. An agency that retains source files, or hands over a flattened version, has made itself difficult to leave. That is worth treating as a serious warning sign regardless of how good the work looks.

What is the difference between a product design agency and a web design agency?

A web design agency builds the site that convinces someone to sign up. A product design agency designs what happens after they log in. The skills only partly overlap: marketing sites are judged on conversion and first impression, products on whether someone can complete a task on their fortieth visit without thinking about it. Product work needs research, flows, states, error handling and a design system that holds together as features accumulate. Plenty of firms offer both, and some do both well, but if you are buying product design you should be looking at application screenshots in the portfolio, not homepages.

How long does a full product redesign take?

For a product of real complexity, plan for three to six months of design work, and expect the engineering to run longer than that. A single flow redesigned in isolation can take four to six weeks. Anyone promising a full product redesign in a month is either working from a very small surface area or skipping the research and validation that make a redesign worth doing. Bear in mind the design timeline and the shipping timeline are different questions, which is why agencies that also build, Netguru, thoughtbot and Tonik among them, can be simpler to plan around.

How do I judge a product design portfolio properly?

Read the reasoning, not the screenshots. Portfolio images are art-directed and tell you about visual taste, which is the easiest thing to assess and the least predictive of a good outcome. What you want is the case study underneath: what problem existed, what the team learned from users, what they tried that did not work, and what changed after launch. A firm that can describe a wrong turn it took is describing a real project. It is also worth checking who at the agency actually did the work shown, since portfolios outlive the people who built them.

Can a product design agency build the product, or only design it?

Both models are on this list and it is worth deciding which you need before you brief anyone. Netguru, thoughtbot, Sanctuary Computer, Tonik and Upstatement all design and build. MetaLab, Eleken, UX Studio and Ramotion are design-led and will hand designs to your engineers. Design-and-build removes a handover that often goes badly and gives you one accountable party, which matters most when you have no in-house engineering. Design-only is usually better value when you already have a capable engineering team, since you are not paying agency rates for development you can do yourself.

What should a product design agency agree to measure?

Something specific and pre-agreed, defined before work starts rather than reported afterwards. Reasonable targets are activation rate, task completion, time to first value, support ticket volume on the flows being redesigned, and retention at a defined interval. The point is less the particular metric than the discipline: an agency willing to name a number is an agency that will make design decisions against evidence rather than taste. Ask for examples of metrics they have moved on past projects. A firm that has never measured its own work will not start on yours.
